We invite you to have a look at the wonderful project one of our team members, Aaliyah Sirengo has seeded, and is now leading.
Aaliyah is off to a great start in leading her 2021 seeded project of eradicating period poverty from Korogocho. Through the collaboration of others Aaliyah has created a job and is on the way to her first 1000 sanitary pad packs for girls in our community.
Girls can miss up to 180 days per year of school simply because of their period.
Aaliyah is on a mission to change this!
“The intention of my seed and lead idea is to eradicate period poverty from our community in Kenya and hopefully beyond.
The purpose for this initiative is that I believe there is not a lot of point in having schools if girls miss a week a month because they have their period and no access to sanitary products. I am doing this firstly by raising funds to make sustainable sanitary products. We have researched a model that has proven to be successful whereby girls receive a pack that contains 2 sanitary casings, eight liners, a water proof bag and two pairs of underwear.
These packs will be packaged in a small carry bag and distributed to girls. We will also include an information pack and provide some training for girls to teach them how to use the packs. I have already raised enough money to make the first 500 packs. We use a sewing machine that was purchased by my younger brother and sister and have employed our first woman to do the sewing.
With further funding we will be in a position to buy another sewing machine, employ another lady and keep growing the project.” –
