By Cherie Rowett for NOW Social Empowerment Collective
Thanks to those who connected on Tuesday 26th May for the NOW Social Empowerment online conversation about New Style Leadership – another of our social change campaign topics that seems important to talk about at this time, given that NOW’s mission is to keep the conversation going for positive social change.
As our country starts to emerge from the worldwide “Pause” we noted in our conversation today the importance of what we choose to prioritize for attention and action. There was agreement that the improvements we want in our community can’t be left to layers of government but need people and communities to come alive with benevolent purpose.
We talked about how observing our kids in their various responses to homeschooling for periods of time during the Pause, has reminded us of the bonus of internal motivation Vs over-relying on external motivation and external drivers. As adults, we too can tune into our internal compass and drivers.
Indeed some in the conversation today indicated that the criteria of “why” and “what for?” are foremost when now considering where to invest time and attention. It can feel almost like a lethargy – difficulty finding motivation for the usual things and the usual addictive activity levels. But it is also about feeling drawn to focus only on what seems central to our mastery and what it is we are here to give. Which can result in more energy to direct to our niche area, and more clarity about what we feel is worth doing/creating and worth doing/creating well.
We discussed briefly how we can each be led by a vision for the future or by a hope in our hearts. The important thing seems to be that we actually notice and respond to that vision or call and that we avoid complacency or outsourcing of our leadership opportunities, rights, and responsibilities.
So, as usual in this conversational series – there was plenty to think about as the conversation connected us more deeply with ourselves and with others.
There is one more NOW social change campaign to be discussed – Activating Purposeful Enterprise, and that topic will be convened soon, possibly with face-to-face elements as well as Zoom, so watch this space and our FB page for further updates in the next few weeks.
